In February 1951, near a central South Korean town named Wonju, American forces finally quit running and started fighting - and stopped the Chinese juggernaut cold. Just as the Battle of Gettysburg was the highwater mark of the Confederacy's bid for secession, the Chinese offensive launched at Wonju was the high point from which China's hopes for victory faded. This is the first book to show that after fifteen days of combat at Wonju, Chinese leaders realized they could not win the war and could possibly lose it. On this not particularly well-known battlefield, U.N. forces led by brave U.S. and South Korean fighting men ensured South Korean independence. Coleman's comparison between Wonju and Gettysburg is original and thought provoking.

In 1910, New York City was bursting at the seams as more and more people crowded into a limited supply of housing in the tenement districts of Manhattan and the older areas of Brooklyn. With no outlet for its exploding population, and the burgeoning social problems created by the overwhelming congestion, New York faced a serious crisis which city and state leaders addressed with dramatic measures. In March 1913, public officials and officers of the two existing rapid transit networks shook hands to seal a deal for a greatly expanded subway system which would more than double the size of the two existing transit networks.

At the time the largest and most expensive single municipal project ever attempted, the Dual System of Rapid Transit set the pattern of growth in New York City for decades to come, helped provide millions of families a better quality of life, and, in the words of Manhattan borough president George McAneny (1910-1913), "proved the city's physical salvation." It stands as that rare success story, an enormously complicated project undertaken against great odds which proved successful beyond all measure.

Stawiski, Poland is a small town in northeastern Poland situated on the Dzierzbia River. The town was established in the early 15th century and over the years had multiple rulers. Napoleon's march across Europe to Russia took him through Stawiski. The town was a commercial center known for furs, fabrics and hats. The Great Synagogue of Stawiski was built in 1739; it was destroyed by the Nazis during World War II. The town first came under Soviet occupation and in June 1941 the Germans seized control of the town. A month later the Nazis forced many of the town's Jewish residents march into the forest where they were murdered; today there is a mass grave of 700 people at the site. Other Jews from Stawiski were sent to the transport camp of Bogusze. Those surviving that camp were transported to Treblinka and Auschwitz. Once a town with over 2000 Jews, no Jews live in Stawiski today. This book serves as a memorial to the Jewish community of Stawiski that no longer exists. It will be of interest to descendants of the town's Jewish community, scholars of Polish, World War II and Jewish history desiring primary source material. During the course of this century, gauge invariance has slowly emerged from being an incidental symmetry of electromagnetism to being a fundamental geometrical principle underlying the four known fundamental physical interactions. The development has been in two stages. In the first stage (1916-1956) the geometrical significance of gauge-invariance gradually came to be appreciated and the original abelian gauge-invariance of electromagnetism was generalized to non-abelian gauge invariance. In the second stage (1960-1975) it was found that, contrary to first appearances, the non-abelian gauge-theories provided exactly the framework that was needed to describe the nuclear interactions (both weak and strong) and thus provided a universal framework for describing all known fundamental interactions. In this work, Lochlainn O'Raifeartaigh describes the former phase.

O'Raifeartaigh first illustrates how gravitational theory and quantum mechanics played crucial roles in the reassessment of gauge theory as a geometric principle and as a framework for describing both electromagnetism and gravitation. He then describes how the abelian electromagnetic gauge-theory was generalized to its present non-abelian form. The development is illustrated by including a selection of relevant articles, many of them appearing here for the first time in English, notably by Weyl, Schrodinger, Klein, and London in the pre-war years, and by Pauli, Shaw, Yang-Mills, and Utiyama after the war. The articles illustrate that the reassessment of gauge-theory, due in a large measure to Weyl, constituted a major philosophical as well as technical advance.
