Two central philosophies of the twentieth century are Marxism, with its stress on society, and Existentialism, with its stress on the individual. This concise and lucid volume examines the two: their common root in Hegel, their relationship to each other, their arguments with each other, their similarities, and their basic differences. Because Existentialism is a later development than Marxism and in practice has acted as the challenger or protagonist, the book presents the Existentialist argument first in each case, and then the Marxist replies and counter arguments. Throughout, the Existentialism emphasized is that of the French atheistic school headed by Jean-Paul Satre, for here the confrontation with Marxism appears at its sharpest; and there is an analysis of Sartre's recent and, in the author's opinion, unsuccessful attempt to unite the two philosophies. But many of the criticisms raised by the French school would be raised by all Existential philosophies. The presentation of the Marxist side includes the later orthodox developments of Marxism in both the Soviet Union and elsewhere.
